Magento 1 to 2 – time to upgrade?

30.04.19
If you've been considering upgrading from Magento 1 to 2 the message is clear………. don’t leave it too late.
We’ve previously covered the multitude of enhancements which were launched with the latest version of Magento 2.3 but improved functionality isn’t the only reason for users of Magento 1 to be planning their upgrade to Magento 2.
It’s been widely publicised that Magento have announced the ‘end of life’ for version 1 as June 2020. If you’re still using a version of Magento 1 you may have also noticed a warning to this effect when you log into your dashboard.
Will I still be able to use my Magento 1 site?
This doesn’t mean your Magento 1 site will stop working overnight when the EOL date arrives but it does mean future security updates will cease. In essence this could mean your site will become vulnerable and the availability of official security patches will no longer be there to negate this. Unfortunately with a worldwide community of hackers and cybercrimes on the rise, merchants continuing to use old versions of Magento could become a target.
Once June 2020 has passed your Magento 1 site could also fail to pass security scans and potentially no longer reach compliance standards.
If you are still using Magento 1 the clock is ticking. Upgrading to Magento 2 isn’t simply a case of installing an update. Magento 2 is an entirely new platform and offers you the opportunity to plan and implement all of the improvements you have been considering for your online store.
Let’s just recap on some of the improvements included within Magento 2

Speed – previous versions of Magento have often been tainted with speed issues. Site speed not only effects users’ experience but also contributes to the success of search engine rankings. Enhancements with load times, image optimisation and the general site speed of Magento 2 is therefore most welcome

Improved Checkout – the new optimised checkout process will inevitably contribute to improvements in conversion rates.

Better admin area – users of Magento 2 have reported they find the new admin area much more user-friendly

Elasticsearch – a powerful search functionality for users which is now available with the open source version of Magento (previously only available with the Commerce version)

Time to start planning?
As June 2020 approaches Affinity would suggest the time to start planning your new Magento 2 site is now.
The driver for your new Magento 2 site should be centered on improving functionality for the benefit of your existing and future customers and forward planning which is not hindered by the  impending EOL date is highly recommended.
